Labour Party Sets Primary Election Dates for 2026

The Labour Party's National Executive Council (NEC) convened on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, to approve the timeline for its primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections. The gubernatorial and senatorial primaries are scheduled for May 15, 2026, while the presidential primary will take place on May 23, 2026.

The NEC ratified actions regarding the conduct of ward and local government congresses from March 26 to March 31, 2026, and a national convention on April 11, 2026. Additionally, the NEC suspended several members for engaging in anti-party activities, following a thorough review of recent incidents involving alleged hoodlum invasions of the party's secretariat.

The suspended members include Enayi G. Zidougha, Hilda Doukubo, and others.

The NEC also approved a hybrid approach for party membership registration to modernize the party's database and enhance democratic participation, in compliance with the Electoral Act of 2026.
