Nigerian Women Lead Voter Registration Surge for 2027 Elections

In Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reports that over 2.5 million new voters have registered online for the 2027 elections, with women outnumbering men. The registration exercise began on August 25, and within the first five days, women accounted for the majority at 55%, compared to men at 45%.

The age group of 18-34 made up the majority of registrants. INEC encourages women to complete their biometrics in person after starting the process online.

The commission has deployed staff to assist citizens who prefer in-person registration. This gender gap in voter registration highlights the active participation of women in the electoral process.
