Adamawa CP Warns Officers Against Beer Seller Extortion

CP Kabir Hassan, the Commissioner of Police for Adamawa State Command, issued a warning to police officers against extorting money from beer sellers in Girei Local Government Area. This warning followed a report by PUNCH highlighting the alleged extortion by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Girei, SP Aliyu Adamu.

SP Suleiman Nguroje, the spokesman for the Adamawa State Police Command, clarified that the enforcement activities are legitimate operations to ensure compliance with the Liquor Act, including inspections of licensed premises and closure of illegal outlets. The enforcement is deemed necessary due to recent criminal incidents in Girei, including a reported killing at a hotel.

CP Hassan emphasized that no officer is authorized to demand money from liquor sellers and that any violations will be processed legally. The statement also encouraged public reporting of police misconduct.

However, it did not address the ongoing investigation into the extortion allegations against SP Aliyu Adamu, who reportedly summoned beer sellers to identify the source of the leak to journalists.
