Amnesty International Critiques Kano Governor's Crackdown

Amnesty International has raised alarms regarding the alleged crackdown on critics of the Kano State Government, claiming that arrests, detentions, and intimidation are stifling freedom of expression in the state. In a statement, Amnesty highlighted the case of Abba Ibrahim Kofar Nasarawa, who has reportedly been detained since August, and Murtala Muhammad Dawanau, who was allegedly arrested over a Facebook comment.

Other individuals mentioned include Fatima Dayyabu, Maryam Usman, Muhammad Ahmad, Hafsat Muhammad Sauwama Kauwama, Khadija Garba Kadnass, Ismail Hassan Hussain Lajin Dala, and Isa Zanna Isa. Amnesty condemned these actions as harassment of opposition figures and called for the respect of citizens' rights to criticize elected officials.

In response, the Kano State Government, through Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs Ibrahim Waiya, dismissed Amnesty's claims as one-sided and misleading, asserting that freedom of expression is constitutionally guaranteed but does not exempt individuals from legal scrutiny if their actions violate laws.
