ASUU Issues 4-Day Ultimatum for Lecturer Salary Implementation

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Nigerian government a four-day ultimatum to begin implementing a newly approved salary structure for university lecturers. This announcement was made by ASUU President Christoph Piwuna during a public lecture at the Sa'adatu Rimi College of Education in Bauchi State on Thursday.

The ultimatum takes immediate effect, leaving the government little room for delay. Piwuna stressed that this demand is not new but part of a long-standing agreement that the government has repeatedly failed to execute, leading to ongoing disputes.

He highlighted that poor lecturer remuneration is a critical issue contributing to the brain drain in Nigeria's university system, as many lecturers seek better opportunities abroad. Piwuna expressed concern over the government's history of partial implementation or abandonment of agreements, which has led to frequent disputes and strikes.

If the government fails to comply within the deadline, ASUU may resort to nationwide strikes, which have previously disrupted public universities and affected millions of students across the country.
