Badagry Market Closes for Akran Burial Rites

The Badagry market was temporarily closed on Thursday as burial rites for the late Akran Aholu Menu Toyi commenced on January 12. The Lagos State government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced a 10-day burial program to honor the traditional ruler.

Mr. Abimbola Salu Hundeyin, the Secretary to the State Government, disclosed during a media briefing that the ceremonial activities would run from April 23 to May 6.

The market's closure was communicated by a town crier, and it was noted that the Agbalata market would remain shut during the special rites, which are considered significant for the Badagry community. Traders expressed frustration over the lack of prior notice regarding the market's closure, with some, like fish trader Joseph Edwin, arriving unaware to find their stalls locked.

The burial rites included a procession at the palace and prayers offered by both Christian and Muslim worshippers across Badagry's eight quarters.
