Amnesty International Demands Release of #TinubuMustGo Protesters

Amnesty International has dismissed the Nigeria Police Force's claims that five men arrested for wearing T-shirts with the inscription “Tinubu Must Go” were involved in drug-related activities. The Borno State Police Command, represented by Police Public Relations Officer Nahum Daso Kenneth, stated that the arrests were not politically motivated and accused the men of intending to breach public peace.

Amnesty International condemned the police's narrative, asserting that the drug allegations were a tactic to justify the men's continued detention. The organization demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the detainees—Baba Aji Gremami, Mustapha Abba Yemen, Abacha Mohammed Ali, Adam Umar Gubio, and Abdulhamid Mohammed—emphasizing that dissenting political expression is not a criminal offense.

The men were arraigned in a Chief Magistrate Court in Maiduguri, where they pleaded not guilty, and their lawyers applied for bail, with a ruling expected on October 6.
