Former UNILORIN VC AbdulGaniyu Ambali Dies at 68

AbdulGaniyu Ambali, the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, died at the age of 68 in the early hours of Saturday, June 6, 2026. His death was confirmed by Kunle Akogun, the Director of Corporate Affairs at the University of Ilorin, and announced by the current Vice Chancellor, Wahab Olasupo Egbewol, who described Ambali's passing as a significant loss not only to the university but to the entire nation.

Ambali served as the 9th Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin from 2012 to 2017 and was a renowned scholar in veterinary medicine. He was born on November 29, 1957, in Ilorin, Kwara State, and began his education at Pakata Primary School before attending Government Secondary School in Jalingo.

He obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Ahmadu Bello University in 1981 and later earned a master's degree and PhD in veterinary medicine from the University of Liverpool. Ambali was also a pioneer dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and served as chairman of the Association of West African Universities and the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria.
