Edo State House of Assembly Impeaches Speaker Agbebaku

The Edo State House of Assembly has officially impeached Blessing Agbebaku, who represented Owan West Constituency 1, eight days after a controversy regarding his status as Speaker arose. The impeachment motion was introduced during a plenary session on Monday by Majority Leader Sunny Ojiezele and seconded by Ahmed Waziri, the lawmaker for Etsako Central.

Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo 1, was elected as the new Speaker and clarified that Agbebaku did not resign voluntarily. Idaiye stated that the House converted Agbebaku's indefinite suspension into a full impeachment due to the absence of a formal resignation letter, despite earlier reports on August 17, 2026, indicating that Agbebaku had resigned.

The impeachment notice received support from 17 members of the House. During the same session, Idaiye instructed Agbebaku to return all government property in his possession and warned that security agencies would be involved if he failed to comply.

This development concludes a dispute that began over a week ago.
