Christian Aid, SEMA Launch Flood Awareness in Kaduna

Christian Aid, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has initiated a flood awareness campaign targeting vulnerable communities in Kaduna State. This effort aims to strengthen disaster preparedness and reduce the impact of flooding during the upcoming 2026 rainy season.

The campaign includes sensitization exercises conducted in areas such as Kigo Road, Rafin Guza in Kaduna North Local Government Area, and Karatudu, Nasarawa, and Chikun LGA. Michael Odach Aboh, representing Christian Aid, emphasized the importance of equipping residents with the knowledge needed to prepare for and respond to flood emergencies.

The selected communities are highly vulnerable due to their proximity to waterways and blocked drainage channels, which often lead to flash floods during heavy rainfall. Despite previous interventions, many residents remain in flood-prone areas due to emotional attachments to ancestral homes.

Aboh urged the government to implement stronger preventive measures, including land allocation regulations along riverbanks and river dredging to improve water flow. Moham Shafi Hassan from SEMA advised residents living along waterways to relocate to safer areas as the rainy season approaches.
