Delta Police Report No Rape at Delta Fertility Festival

The Delta State Police Command, represented by spokesperson Bright Edaf, stated that there have been no official reports of rape associated with the recent fertility festival in Ozoro, Delta State. During an interview, Edaf clarified that among four girls interviewed, none reported being raped.

The police are conducting a strict investigation based on evidence, emphasizing that emotional claims do not suffice without factual support. The festival, which occurs every three to four years, is traditionally organized by the chief priest to pray for barren women seeking fertility.

However, the event faced controversy as it was not properly communicated to local authorities, including the student union and school management. Following the festival, a video circulated on social media showing men harassing women, leading to public outrage.

The police arrested 15 suspects, including community leaders. The Delta State government condemned the violence, asserting that cultural practices cannot justify criminal behavior.

The Ozoro Kingdom Palace also distanced itself from the incidents, labeling the harassment as unacceptable.
