Gusau Resigns as NFF President Amid Investigations

Ibrahim Gusau confirmed his resignation as President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) during a press conference on Thursday afternoon. His resignation comes in the wake of increasing criticism regarding the administration of football in Nigeria, particularly after the national teams, including the Super Eagles and Super Falcons, failed to qualify for the World Cup.

The NFF is currently under investigation by security agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS), concerning the management of a 17 billion naira Federal Government intervention fund. This fund, approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024, was intended to address outstanding payments for players' wages and bonuses.

The Super Eagles have missed consecutive FIFA World Cups, while the Super Falcons were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, failing to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
