Edo Government Reveals Details on Aide's Death in 2026

On September 23, 2026, Dr Andrew Iyamu, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health Matters, detailed the circumstances surrounding the death of Alhaji Danjuma Garba, who served as the Special Adviser on Arewa Matters to Governor Monday Okpebholo. Garba died on January 10, 2026, after a brief illness.

Iyamu stated that a final-year medical student from the University of Benin was improperly managing Garba's treatment at a private hospital in Uselu, which violated medical regulations. Iyamu recounted that attempts to transfer Garba to a better-equipped facility were made too late, resulting in severe damage to his health.

He criticized the practice of unqualified individuals treating patients and noted that Garba's family insisted on the medical student's release, despite his status as a student. Iyamu emphasized the importance of seeking care from qualified medical personnel and the state's commitment to addressing quackery in healthcare.
