Fashola Calls for New Approach to Nigeria's Insecurity

Babatunde Fashola, the former Governor of Lagos State, addressed Nigeria's insecurity challenges during the keynote speech at the 12th Triennial National Conference of Jama’at-ul Islamiyya of Nigeria, held at their mosque in Magodo, Lagos. He emphasized that merely increasing the number of security personnel will not resolve the problem.

Fashola argued for a fundamental change in how Nigeria approaches insecurity, advocating for a restoration of respect for law and order and addressing underlying social issues that contribute to criminal activities. He highlighted the importance of law enforcement's integrity and the need for citizens to respect the rule of law, regardless of political, religious, or ethnic affiliations.

Fashola also pointed out the significance of tackling drug abuse and youth idleness, suggesting initiatives like the National Youth Sports Festival to engage young Nigerians positively. He called for serious consideration of the state police proposal, urging that it should not merely serve as an excuse to increase security personnel but should focus on building a professional police system.
