FATE Foundation Launches $1.1M AI Upskilling Programme

FATE Foundation, in partnership with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), is set to implement a $1.1 million AI Upskilling Programme funded by Google.org. This initiative aims to empower educators and Nigerian youths across 10 universities in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa.

The programme was launched recently at the University of Lagos, where Ayomide Akindolie-Igwe, Executive Director of FATE Foundation, stated that lecturers, teaching assistants, and final-year STEM students will benefit. The goal is to train over 30,000 students in advanced AI and integrate the curriculum into mainstream programmes at partner higher educational institutions (HEIs).

Matita Arize, Sub-Saharan Africa Program Manager at Google.org, emphasized the importance of making AI accessible to everyone to address global inequalities. Francis Sani, Programme Director at 3MTT, encouraged participants to focus on localized solutions to national problems, aiming to expand the pool of AI professionals in Nigeria.
