FCT-SEB Promotes Critical Thinking Among Students

The Federal Capital Territory Secondary Education Board (FCT-SEB) urged students to cultivate critical thinking and verification skills in light of rising misinformation and artificial intelligence misuse. This call to action was made on Monday in Abuja during an essay and spelling bee competition organized by Sahara Deck and Zero Meridian Decks of the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) for FCT secondary school students.

Mrs. Theresa Onuora-Oguno represented the Acting Secretary/Director of FCT-SEB, Mrs. Elizabeth Godwin, and highlighted the competition's theme, ‘Read. Think, Verify: Building Critical Information Literacy in the Digital Age.’ She noted the dual challenge of access to vast knowledge and exposure to misinformation via digital platforms.

Onuora-Oguno emphasized the need for students to engage in deep reading and verify information before sharing it. Aloy Atsenokhai, the Second Mate (Chief Programmes Officer) of Sahara Deck, mentioned that 15 students participated, selected by their schools, and faced challenges such as students downloading content from the internet instead of producing original work.
