FERMA Begins Maintenance on Abakaliki-Enugu-Cross River Road

The Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) commenced routine maintenance of the Abakaliki–Enugu–Cross River border highway on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. This federal corridor has seen over 30 fatalities in road crashes over the past two years.

The maintenance is part of FERMA’s Routine and Preventive Maintenance Work Programme (RPMWP) and includes pothole patching, clearing of overgrown vegetation, and desilting of drains and culverts. Mr.

Akinyemi Ojo from FERMA's Ebonyi field office stated that the initiative aligns with the federal government's Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to ensure safer roads and improved security. The maintenance focuses on vegetation control, desilting hydraulic structures, and patching minor potholes to maintain road safety.

Residents of Onuebonyi and Igbeagu communities welcomed the intervention, citing the frequent accidents on the highway. Mr.

Sylvester Odom, a resident, reported that over 30 lives were lost on the Onuebonyi stretch due to poor road conditions, expressing hope that the maintenance would enhance safety.
