FG Approves 24-Hour Electricity for Health Facilities

On Tuesday, the Federal Government of Nigeria approved a financing framework and institutional reforms to enhance the electrification of health facilities, aiming to provide reliable 24-hour electricity to at least 30% of these facilities by the end of 2027. This decision was made during the third meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee of the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative, a program jointly coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Federal Ministry of Power.

Dr. Iziaq Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, announced that the committee endorsed new governance structures and approved a facility energy management framework, along with eight private sector proposals from about 70 submissions received during the National Healthcare Electrification Investor Matchmaking Week in Lagos.

The initiative aims to deliver uninterrupted electricity through public-private partnerships, with various energy technologies tailored to the needs of individual facilities. Energy Management Teams have been established in federal tertiary hospitals, and state governments are encouraged to create similar structures.
