FG Launches N27,000 LPG Cylinders for One Million Homes

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the National Grassroots LPG Access Programme (NGLPP) in Akwa Ibom, distributing 27,000 filled cooking gas cylinders to women as part of its clean cooking campaign. This initiative, implemented by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the Decade of Gas Initiative, aims to increase access to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and reduce reliance on traditional cooking fuels.

The programme targets one million households annually, five million by 2030, and over ten million by 2060. Ed Ubong, Coordinating Director of the Decade of Gas Initiative, emphasized Akwa Ibom's strategic importance in Nigeria's oil and gas sector.

The programme will eventually cover all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with beneficiaries eligible for up to six free LPG refills within one year. A digital monitoring platform will track cylinders and refills.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ekperikpe Ekpo, noted the initiative's commitment to women's empowerment and domestic gas utilization. Governor Umo Eno welcomed the programme for its potential to improve livelihoods and create economic opportunities.
