Nigerian House of Reps Halts Navy's Eviction of Abuja Communities Amid Allegations

The House of Representatives directed the Nigerian Navy to cease the eviction of multiple Abuja communities pending the resolution of a public complaint filed with the Public Complaints Commission (PCC). The complaint alleged that naval officers engaged in criminal activities such as trespassing, intimidation, and unlawfully seizing farmland, demolishing homes, and extorting residents in areas like Tunga Giwa, Tunga Wakili, Tunga Madaki, Iddo Sarki, and Nuwaleg.

Hon. Musa Dikko, a federal commissioner with the PCC, accused the Navy of threatening to evict the communities without due process, causing severe hardships and economic losses.

The House Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions, chaired by Hon. Kwamoti Laori Bitru, commended the PCC's intervention as a crucial step in safeguarding citizens' rights and upholding the rule of law.

The committee adjourned the matter to allow the Nigerian Navy time to respond to the allegations. However, the Navy's representatives were absent from subsequent hearings, leading to further adjournments.

The case was postponed until March 4, 2026, for continued hearings.
