IHVN Trains Journalists to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance

The Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN) has launched a two-day capacity-building program for journalists aimed at combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The training, held in Abuja, underscores the media's vital role in raising public awareness and promoting responsible antibiotic use.

Dr. Patrick Dakum, CEO of IHVN, represented by Dr.

Eriobu Nnakelu, highlighted that AMR is a significant public health issue, as many antibiotics are becoming ineffective against infections. He noted that public ignorance about AMR exacerbates the problem, leading to economic consequences as patients spend resources on ineffective treatments.

The training is part of IHVN's Antimicrobial Stewardship Education Program (A-STEP) and is conducted in collaboration with the Nigeria AMR Media Alliance (NAMA). Dr.

Charity Oga-Omenka, Principal Investigator of the A-STEP Project, pointed out that nearly 70% of Nigerians acquire antibiotics without prescriptions, which contributes to the AMR crisis.
