INEC Confirms No Voter Revalidation Before 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, has stated that it will not conduct a voter revalidation exercise prior to the 2027 general elections. This decision was communicated during a meeting with Moritz Sprenker, the Country Representative of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, at INEC's headquarters in Abuja.

Amupitan explained that the commission requires additional time to validate the records of many registered voters, some of whom registered as far back as 2011. Although the revalidation is deemed necessary, it will take place after the elections to prevent delays in electoral processes.

INEC is preparing for the 2027 elections, with a nationwide mock accreditation exercise scheduled for November 2026 to test the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and other electoral equipment. The commission aims to identify operational challenges and ensure readiness for the elections.

Amupitan outlined five strategic priorities for the elections, including consolidating technological gains and safeguarding electoral integrity.
