CPDD Warns Against Misrepresentation of Military Comments

The Centre for Peace, Democracy and Development (CPDD), a non-partisan advocacy group, expressed disappointment over the misrepresentation of comments made by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, concerning the killing of terrorists. The group noted that these comments have gained traction on social media, distorting the context of General Oluyede's remarks and creating misleading narratives that do not reflect the realities of ongoing military engagements in insurgent-affected areas.

In a statement released on Friday, CPDD convenor Akin Daniel warned that such inaccuracies could undermine military operations, especially at a time when troops are reportedly achieving success against insurgent groups. The CPDD emphasized the importance of accurate reporting, particularly in matters of national security, and called on journalists, bloggers, and social media influencers to exercise restraint and verify facts before dissemination.

They highlighted the risk of misinformation emboldening criminal elements and serving as propaganda for terrorist groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province.
