Media Urged to Report Accurately on Military Remarks

The Centre for Peace and Democracy Development (CPDD) expressed concern over the misrepresentation of comments made by Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, regarding the killing of terrorists.

In a statement released on Friday, CPDD convenor Akin Daniel highlighted that social media platforms have distorted the context of Gen. Oluyede's remarks, creating misleading narratives that do not accurately reflect ongoing military engagements against insurgents.

The CPDD emphasized that this misinformation could weaken public confidence and inadvertently embolden criminal elements, particularly in the context of the ongoing fight against groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province. The organization called on journalists, bloggers, and social media influencers to exercise restraint and verify facts before dissemination, especially concerning national security matters.

They urged stakeholders to prioritize accuracy in reporting to support Nigeria's efforts in combating insurgency.
