Kamalu Bako Advocates for Golf Development Funding in Nigeria

Kamalu Bako, the former number-one golfer in the Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria (PGAN) 2023 Order of Merit rankings, has called for enhanced funding for golf development in Nigeria. In an interview, he urged federal and state governments, corporate organizations, and patriotic Nigerians to support the sport to enable Nigerian professionals to compete effectively on the international stage.

Bako noted that golf is gaining popularity in Nigeria, with approximately 47 golf courses, over 100 professionals, and thousands of amateur players. He emphasized the health benefits of golf and its role in promoting unity, tourism, and economic growth through tournaments.

Currently ranked No. 3,748 in the Official World Golf Ranking, Bako recently participated in Kenya’s Sunshine Development Tour, finishing 18th among 65 professionals at the Absa Ruiru Invitational from August 16 to 18. He pointed out that the seven Nigerian professionals at the event largely self-financed their participation, receiving minimal assistance.

Bako called for partnerships with the Nigerian Golf Federation and PGAN to sponsor professionals in regional and international tournaments.
