Kano Assembly Suspends LG Chairmen Over Misconduct

On Tuesday, the Kano State House of Assembly suspended the chairmen of Bagwai, Bebeji, and Rogo local government areas for three months. This decision was made due to allegations of financial misappropriation, abuse of office, and other acts of misconduct.

The resolution was based on the report presented by Hon. Aliyu Muhammad, chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Ismail Falgore.

The committee investigated separate petitions against the three council chairmen after the assembly referred the complaints for scrutiny. The investigation included examining documentary evidence from the councils and holding sessions with their legislative councils.

The report indicated that in Bagwai, there were allegations of misappropriation of public funds for developmental projects. In Bebeji, credible allegations included abuse of office, contract violations, improper land sales, diversion of public funds, unlawful deductions from contract payments, and procurement irregularities.

Contractors were reportedly forced to remit payments into accounts nominated by the council chairman, violating financial regulations.
