AIG Bans Amotekun from Election Security Operations

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 11 Headquarters, Osogbo, has issued a ban on the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun, and other vigilante groups from engaging in security operations for the upcoming governorship election scheduled for August 15. In a press statement signed by SP Ojedele Olanrewaju Tunji, the AIG warned these groups to refrain from interfering with the electoral process or face legal consequences.

He stressed that peace and adherence to the rule of law are essential for the election's success. The AIG clarified that only constitutionally recognized security agencies are permitted to provide security before, during, and after the election.

He urged all security personnel to be properly identified and in uniform to prevent impersonation. The AIG also called on political parties, candidates, and the public to cooperate with security personnel and report any acts of violence or intimidation, warning that violations of the Electoral Act will lead to arrests and prosecution.
