Police Prohibit Amotekun from Osun Governorship Election

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a directive barring the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun, along with vigilante groups and other non-state security outfits from engaging in security operations for the Osun State governorship election set for August 15, 2026. This announcement was made in a statement by CSP Ani Iniedu on behalf of Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu.

The police emphasized that these groups are not authorized to escort electoral materials, guard polling units, or bear arms during the election. They warned political parties, candidates, and supporters against involving these unauthorized security outfits, stating that any member or sponsor would face arrest and prosecution.

The police reiterated that the responsibility for election security lies with constitutionally recognized agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and others. They also cautioned against electoral offenses such as ballot snatching and voter intimidation, asserting that violators would be prosecuted regardless of their political affiliations.
