Lagos State Closes Eko Bridge for Urgent Repairs

The Lagos State Government has declared an emergency closure of Eko Bridge, effective Tuesday, May 12, 2026, for necessary repairs and safety investigations. The closure will affect the outbound section of the bridge covering the stretch from Apongbon to Ijora Olopa, while the inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain open.

Oluwaseun OsiYemi, the state commissioner for transport, issued a statement advising motorists to utilize alternative routes, particularly the Third Mainland Bridge, to reach their destinations. Traffic security personnel will be deployed along these routes to facilitate smooth traffic flow.

This decision follows a federal government order to commence the construction of a new Carter Bridge due to urgent structural concerns. David Umahi, the Minister of Works, indicated that underwater assessments revealed critical defects in bridge infrastructure across the state, with investigations dating back to 2013 highlighting issues with support piles beneath the Carter and Third Mainland Bridges.
