LASTMA Clears Officers of Extortion Allegations in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has cleared its officers of allegations of extortion after an internal investigation. The claims involved officers allegedly collecting N100,000 from commercial bus drivers along the coastal road corridor.

General Manager Olalekan Bakar Oki issued a press statement confirming that the investigation found no evidence of extortion, establishing that enforcement actions taken against drivers were legitimate and based on documented traffic violations. He emphasized the agency's commitment to transparency and warned against the publication of unverifiable and defamatory reports that could erode public trust in government institutions.

Oki highlighted the role of the media in promoting traffic compliance and civic responsibility, urging journalists to prioritize fact-checking. LASTMA remains open to engagement and has established feedback mechanisms, including a toll-free line for public grievances regarding enforcement activities.
