Gunmen Attack Six Communities in Benue State

On Sunday morning, suspected herdsmen attacked several farming settlements in Mbaterem, Ukum Local Government Area, Benue State, around 4:30 AM. The attackers opened fire, resulting in casualties and injuries among residents who fled into surrounding bushes for safety.
Mchie Jacob, a resident, reported that six settlements, including Ayaba, Ukpen, Bom, Aboajio, and Yina in Mbazun Ward, were targeted, with heavy gunfire lasting over five hours. Nearby communities, such as Dajo, Tse-Ayiaga, Tse-Iba, and Abingi, also experienced panic as residents evacuated their homes.
Security personnel arrived in three trucks but faced challenges due to the intensity of the attack and fires in the area. Jacob expressed uncertainty about the number of casualties and urged the state government and Ukum local government to deploy additional security forces.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the attack and stated that further details would be communicated as they become available.
