NAFDAC Issues Urgent Warning Over Fake Betaclox Antibiotic in Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised an urgent public health alert in Nigeria after discovering fake Betaclox antibiotics in circulation. The counterfeit medication, containing ampicillin and cloxacillin, was found to have fraudulent registration details and unverified sources, posing significant risks to public health and safety.

Investigations revealed that the fake Betaclox was procured from the Gambori market in Maiduguri, distributed from Kano to retail outlets in Zaria. The falsified product's packaging displayed a different medicine's registration number, further raising suspicions about its authenticity.

NAFDAC warns that the use of such unregistered and substandard medicines could lead to ineffective treatment, worsened illnesses, and accelerated antimicrobial resistance.
