NFF President Gusau Resigns Amid National Discontent

On Thursday, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi resigned from their positions following widespread national discontent regarding the poor performances of the National Teams. All members of the NFF Executive Committee also resigned.

Gusau's resignation occurs 34 days before the conclusion of his four-year term, which began when he was elected at the NFF Annual General Assembly in Benin City, Edo State, on 30th September 2022. He stated that his decision was made after consultations with family, friends, and stakeholders in the football community, aiming to facilitate a comprehensive reform process to address longstanding challenges in Nigerian football.

At a press conference in Abuja, Gusau expressed satisfaction with his administration's achievements, including advancements in coaching education, stability in the domestic league calendar, and infrastructure improvements. However, he stepped down following disappointing results, notably the Super Falcons' failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, marking Nigeria's first absence in 35 years.
