Northern Christians Demand Religious Census for Accuracy

Rev. Joseph John Hayab, the Chairman of the Northern Christian Association (NCA), has called on the Nigerian federal government to incorporate questions about religious affiliation in the upcoming national census. He argues that this inclusion would help clarify unverified claims regarding the population strength of various religious groups, particularly in light of recent comments made by Islamic cleric Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir regarding the Muslim political arrangement and the numerical dominance of Muslims.

Hayab expressed that the lack of reliable demographic data has led to competing claims of numerical superiority, which often influence political discourse and campaigns. He emphasized that no religious group should leverage claims of numerical strength to marginalize others.

Hayab's remarks came during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, where he reiterated the need for factual data to foster unity and discourage discrimination among citizens. He urged the government to act on this issue to ensure fair representation and understanding of Nigeria's religious demographics.
