PDP Spokesperson Ewa Okpo Arrested for Defamation Claims

Ewa Okpo, the spokesperson for the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State, was arrested by the police following a petition filed by former Senator Effiong Bob. The petition, submitted on June 17, alleged that Okpo made damaging claims against Bob on social media, which the police categorized as defamatory and cyberstalking.

The police confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, stating that it was conducted lawfully and in accordance with due process. They emphasized that while freedom of expression is protected under the Nigerian constitution, social media should not be used to spread falsehoods or intimidate others.

In response, Effiong Bob defended his decision to report the case, asserting that the allegations were purely defamatory and aimed at silencing opposition voices. The PDP condemned Okpo's arrest, labeling it a politically motivated act intended to intimidate party members.

They announced plans to assemble a legal team to support Okpo and resist any attempts to silence their members.
