REA to Invest $12M in Kebbi's 3.5MW Solar Project

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) announced plans to install a 3.5MW solar power plant in Ambursa, Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, Kebbi State, with an investment of $12 million. This initiative aims to expand electricity access to underserved communities and is part of the federal government's efforts to improve power supply across Nigeria.
Dr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, Managing Director of REA, disclosed the project during a courtesy visit to Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris.
The project will receive additional investment from REA's development partner, Kelm Elicom, bringing the total investment to $12 million. The solar plant is expected to provide electricity to 1,500 households in the surrounding communities.
Aliyu noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved $750 million for a World Bank program aimed at enhancing renewable energy access nationwide, which includes deploying 1,300 mini-grids across the country. The Kebbi solar project will interconnect with the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company's network, and plans include installing solar-powered streetlights and standalone solar systems in additional communities.
