SDP to Proceed with Bauchi Convention Amid Leadership Crisis

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has affirmed its intention to hold its national convention in Bauchi State on May 9, 2026, despite recent turmoil involving a police presence at its Abuja headquarters. This situation arose after allegations of interference by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the party's internal affairs, particularly concerning the legitimacy of Shehu Musa Gabam's leadership.

Prof. Sadiq Gomb, the current national chairman, condemned the police's actions as an intimidation tactic and insisted that the convention would proceed as planned.

The leadership crisis intensified following a court ruling that recognized Gabam's removal from the party, which Gomb claims was due to misconduct. A disciplinary committee had previously recommended Gabam's expulsion, which was later ratified by the party's national executive committee.

The SDP maintains that there is no ongoing leadership dispute, despite INEC's recent updates that included Gabam's name on their official list.
