IGP Urged to Investigate Viral Police Operation in Abuja

Stakeholders, including Sajai Omagbemi, have called for the intervention of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) regarding a viral video that surfaced online, depicting armed policemen during an operation at a Ghanaian-owned investment facility in Abuja on June 29. The video shows armed men, allegedly from the Counter Terrorism Unit of the Nigerian Police Force, preventing staff from interacting with the operation.

Eyewitnesses reported that officers insisted on stopping staff from recording the incident, claiming it violated their rights. Omagbemi emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to clarify whether the armed men were genuine police personnel and to address the circumstances surrounding the operation.

He warned that failure to resolve the matter could undermine investor confidence in Nigeria and trigger xenophobic sentiments. The stakeholders are appealing to President Bola Tinubu to ensure justice is served and to reinforce Nigeria's commitment to the rule of law.

As of the report, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command had not issued an official statement regarding the viral video.
