Nigeria's Climate Governance Ranking Set for October 2026

The third edition of the Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking is set to take place on October 8, 2026, in Abuja, Nigeria. Organized by the Department of Climate Change (DCC) of the Federal Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP), the event will gather Commissioners for Environment, Directors of Climate Change, Desk Officers from all 36 states, and representatives from federal ministries, development partners, climate finance institutions, the private sector, and civil society groups.
Malam Balarabe Lawal, the Minister of Environment, is expected to lead the launch. The SCGPR 3.0 aims to assess how states are developing institutions and policies to address climate change, with a focus on actual implementation rather than just policy formulation.
The assessment will cover five areas: climate governance, policies, project implementation, climate finance, and online visibility of initiatives. This edition introduces a strengthened framework to enhance accountability and guide technical and financial support where needed.
