Transport Unions Back FG's 500 CNG Stations Initiative

The Federal Government's plan to establish 500 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling stations across Nigeria has received support from transport unions, who assert that the initiative could significantly reduce transportation costs and alleviate inflation. Aliyu Ore, the Deputy President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, stated that distributing the stations across states would lead to lower transport fares, with each state expected to receive approximately 20 stations.

He emphasized that the success of this initiative hinges on the availability and functionality of the stations. Ibrahim Yusuf, the Secretary-General of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the initiative could mitigate hardship and inflation in the transport sector.

He noted that the rollout could lead to a decrease in the price of essential goods, such as rice, due to reduced transportation costs. In August 2026, President Bola Tinubu directed the rollout of an additional 500 CNG refueling stations, increasing the planned network to 1,000 stations.
