CP Azare Urges Journalists to Verify Reports Before Publishing

On August 26, 2023, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State Command, addressed journalists at a symposium on Effective Crime and Court Reporting, organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Akwa Ibom State Judiciary at the NUJ Press Centre in Uyo. Azare emphasized the necessity for journalists to prioritize verification, accuracy, and fairness in their reports, particularly concerning crime and ongoing investigations.

He warned that the rapid pace of digital communication and social media should not compel journalists to publish unverified information, as this could harm investigations and reputations. Azare highlighted the importance of distinguishing between a suspect and a convicted person, stating that an arrest does not imply guilt.

He urged journalists to verify facts, confirm reports with the police, and avoid sensationalizing allegations. Furthermore, he called for sensitivity in reporting vulnerable individuals and stressed that the court, not media outlets, determines guilt.
