MURIC Opposes New NYSC Uniform Over Hijab Concerns

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), led by Executive Director Professor Ishaq Akintola, has issued a warning to the Nigerian government regarding the proposed redesign of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform. The group opposes the new uniform design, stating it fails to reflect religious inclusivity, especially for Muslim female corps members who require hijab.

This statement was made following discussions about the government's broader reform plans for the NYSC scheme. While welcoming some aspects of the proposed reforms, Akintola cautioned against creating new controversies and stressed the importance of involving Muslim organizations in the design process.

He highlighted that the new uniform should not only serve aesthetic purposes but also respect Nigeria's religious and cultural diversity. Akintola reiterated that any design that does not accommodate Muslim values would be rejected, urging the government to ensure broad consultations to avoid backlash from the Muslim community.
