Why Military Burns Vessels Seized From Oil Thieves – CDS

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Lucky Irabor explained in an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today why the military burns vessels seized from oil thieves. General Irabor expressed frustration over the slow pace of justice which often results in cases being dismissed on technical grounds, discouraging soldiers and emboldening criminals.

He cited an example in the Niger Delta where a vessel seized for illegal bunkering was returned to the operator with a token fine. General Irabor emphasized that the military is left with no choice but to destroy these vessels directly.

He stressed the need for Nigeria to strengthen its justice system to support the fight against terrorism, banditry, and organized crime.
