Nigeria's Power Minister Tegbe Unveils Energy Zones Initiative

The Federal Government is advancing plans to create Energy Zones in Nigeria's highest-demand areas to provide stable, 24-hour electricity to homes, businesses, and industries. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe discussed these proposed zones during a strategic meeting with leaders from selected electricity distribution companies, including Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Ikeja Electric, Eko Power Ltd, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, and Sahara Energy Group.

The initiative targets key corridors such as Lagos, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, and Enugu-Port-Harcourt. The government aims to address distribution constraints, enhance commercial and industrial demand, and improve revenue collection for distribution companies.

Tegbe noted that challenges in the electricity sector extend beyond generation and transmission to distribution capabilities. The initiative is also a response to a significant revenue gap of approximately N1.36 trillion between electricity supplied and revenue collected.

The government has no immediate plans to increase electricity tariffs and intends to issue up to N4 trillion in government-backed bonds to settle legacy debts owed to electricity generation companies and gas suppliers.
