Kano suspends Durbar festivals and horse-riding over security fears

The Kano State Government has put a temporary halt on all Durbar processions and horse-riding events across the Kano metropolis. The decision emerged from an emergency gathering of the State Security Council at the Government House, where officials examined the security landscape surrounding these planned activities.

A statement released on Sunday by the Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Government House, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed the suspension would remain in effect until further notice. Officials framed the move as a precautionary step designed to protect public safety and prevent potential confrontations.

The government's assessment indicated that significant mobilisation of supporters connected to the planned events had created conditions that authorities deemed risky. By suspending the activities, state officials said they aimed to avert possible loss of life and property damage in the state.

Durbar processions are traditional ceremonial parades featuring emirs, traditional rulers, mounted riders, and other dignitaries who proceed through city streets. These events typically occur during festivals or major state occasions and have deep cultural roots in Kano's heritage.
