NHRC Demands Arrest of Kuje Chairman Over APC Comments

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has requested the police to arrest and prosecute Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, following his controversial remarks in a viral video. In the video, Shekwolo warned residents to either support the All Progressives Congress (APC) or leave the area, stating, “It’s either you are with us or you are against us.” The NHRC deemed these comments unacceptable, asserting that no public official can dictate a citizen's political affiliation as a condition for residency or access to government projects.

Chief Tony Ojukwu, SAN, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, emphasized that the Constitution guarantees Nigerians the right to freely associate and choose their political party without discrimination. He cited relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution and electoral laws, highlighting the potential legal implications of Shekwolo's statements.

The NHRC warned that such inflammatory rhetoric could lead to harassment and violence, especially with the upcoming 2027 elections.
