Tinubu Orders Major Reforms for Nigerian Football

On August 27, President Bola Tinubu announced a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football, aimed at addressing the governance and administration challenges that have led to disappointing performances and failures to qualify for major tournaments. The directive, communicated through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, emphasizes the need for structural changes to strengthen institutions responsible for football development in Nigeria.

Tinubu highlighted that despite Nigeria's rich football history, including three Africa Cup of Nations titles and Olympic success, the country has struggled to convert its talent into consistent international success. The Super Eagles and other national teams have faced numerous qualification failures, prompting the need for reforms that go beyond temporary fixes.

Tinubu noted that while other sports have progressed under the re-established National Sports Commission, football continues to face challenges due to structural weaknesses. He underscored football's status as Nigeria's most popular sport, deserving of better performance and governance.
