UEFA Drops FIFA Boycott Threat Over World Cup Stakes

UEFA is set to drop its threat to boycott FIFA competitions following assurances that Gianni Infantino’s controversial plan to sell stakes in the World Cup and other major tournaments will not be revived. This decision is expected to be confirmed at an upcoming UEFA executive committee meeting in Monaco.

UEFA’s 55 member associations had unanimously supported a boycott after details of FIFA Forward Enterprises emerged, which proposed opening stakes in major FIFA competitions to private investors. UEFA demanded the withdrawal of this plan and guarantees from FIFA that similar proposals would not be pursued again.

FIFA abandoned the proposal after widespread opposition, leading UEFA to receive assurances against any future attempts. Consequently, European teams are expected to participate in the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, starting on 5 September.

However, UEFA’s decision does not indicate an end to its criticism of Infantino’s leadership, as UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin continues to advocate for governance reforms within FIFA.
