Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty in UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder

Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges in connection with the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City on December 4, 2024. In a Manhattan federal court, Mangione revealed he posed as a prospective investor managing over $50 billion to gather information about a UnitedHealthcare investors’ conference and locate Thompson.

He admitted to shooting Thompson, acknowledging that his actions would instill fear of death or serious bodily injury. Mangione cited his negative experiences with the healthcare system following a back injury as a motive for targeting Thompson, despite having no personal relationship with him or UnitedHealthcare.

Following the plea, Thompson’s family expressed gratitude for the accountability achieved through the federal justice system. Mangione faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, with prosecutors seeking this outcome.

He is scheduled for sentencing on December 18, and his defense team is contesting separate murder charges in New York State, claiming double jeopardy protections.
