Police Arrest Five for Wearing 'Tinubu Must Go' Shirts

On 25 September 2026, five men were arrested in Maiduguri, Borno State, while wearing T-shirts inscribed with "Tinubu Must Go." The Borno State Police Command clarified that the arrests were not solely due to the T-shirts but included allegations of inciting disturbance, breach of public peace, thuggery, and possession of drug substances. The suspects were found with 15 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, 100 tablets suspected to be D5, a shisha pot, scissors, and two T-shirts.

Following a preliminary investigation, the case was charged to court. The Nigeria Police Force emphasized its non-partisan stance and commitment to human rights.

The arrests sparked controversy, with Amnesty International condemning the actions as arbitrary and calling for the men’s release, asserting that expressing political dissent through clothing is a fundamental human right.
